(WASHINGTON) – U.S. Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-FL), Ranking Republican on the House Foreign Affairs Committee, will speak Tomorrow, Thursday, July 22, at 12:00 noon at a rally on the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol in support of the Falun Gong practitioners in China and around the world who are persecuted by the Chinese regime. Statement by Ros-Lehtinen:
“The Chinese regime’s obsessive and relentless hunting down of Falun Gong practitioners – both in China, and around the world – is brutal, intolerable, and one of the most flagrant examples of systematic persecution in the world today.
“Among the countless victims of the Chinese regime is Mr. Gao Zhisheng, a renowned human rights lawyer and defender of the Falun Gong who was taken away by Chinese secret police in February of 2009.
“I ask the tyrants in Beijing: where is Gao Zhisheng, and what have you done with him and the countless other courageous advocates for human rights and religious freedom languishing in the Chinese gulag?
“Responsible nations must continue to stand up for all of those who, like Falun Gong practitioners, are wrongfully targeted by tyrannical regimes due to their spiritual beliefs.”
Note: Tomorrow’s rally will take place from 12:00 p.m. – 1:30 p.m. Ros-Lehtinen will speak at 12:00 noon.
Background: Ros-Lehtinen is the author of H.Res. 605, which recognizes the continued persecution of Falun Gong practitioners in China, and which was overwhelmingly passed by the House in March.
